Emergency Lighting
Professional emergency lighting installation, testing and maintenance to ensure safe evacuation routes in the event of a power failure or emergency.
Illuminating Safe Escape Routes
Emergency lighting is a critical life safety system that activates automatically when the normal power supply fails. It illuminates escape routes, exit doors and safety equipment, allowing occupants to evacuate safely in an emergency.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, all non-domestic premises must have adequate emergency lighting. D S Fire Safety provides complete emergency lighting solutions from design and installation through to ongoing testing and maintenance.

Types of Emergency Lighting

Maintained
Luminaires that are lit at all times from the normal supply and continue to operate from the emergency supply when the normal supply fails. Ideal for areas that require constant illumination such as theatres, cinemas and entertainment venues.
Non-Maintained
Luminaires that only operate from the emergency supply when the normal supply fails. The most common type for offices, shops, factories and other commercial premises where normal lighting is always on during occupation.
Self-Contained
Each luminaire contains its own battery, charger and control circuitry. Simple to install and maintain, with no requirement for central battery systems or additional wiring.
Central Battery
Luminaires powered from a central battery system. Ideal for larger installations where centralised monitoring and maintenance is preferred, reducing the number of batteries to maintain.
Testing Requirements
Emergency lighting must be tested regularly to ensure it will operate correctly in an emergency. BS 5266-1 specifies the following testing regime:
Function Test
Brief test to confirm each luminaire illuminates correctly when the supply is interrupted.
Short Duration Test
Test for one-third of the rated duration to check battery condition and charging systems.
Full Duration Test
Complete discharge test for the full rated duration (typically 3 hours) to verify emergency operation.
